Zakynthos or Zante (from Venetian) is a Greek Island in the Ionian Sea, approximately 20 kms from the Greek mainland. It is the third largest of the Ionian Islands. It covers an area of 410 sq kms and its coastline is roughly 123 kms in length. The island name is pre-Mycenaean or Pelesgian in origin, and is said to be named after Zakynthos, the son of a legendary Arcadian warrior chief, Dardanus. The island's nickname is Il fiore di Levant (flower of the East) given by the Venetians.
Zakynthos is a tourist destination with an International airport served by many charter flights from Northern Europe. The most famous landmark of the island is the Navagio beach. It is a cove on the NW shore, isolated by high cliffs and only accessible by boat. Here can be seen the shipwreck of MV Panagiotis which sunk on the shore around 1980.
