'Pomegranate Ermioni' from Greece

An important development for the famous historic pomegranates of Ermioni, they have now acquired a Protected Designation of Origin.  The European Commission approved the application for registration for 'Pomegranate Ermioni' from Greece, in the register of protected designations of origin (PDO).  The 'Pomegranate of Ermioni' is a fruit that has been grown and cultivated for thousands of years in Ermioni (ancient Hermione) and the surrounding areas of Ermionida in the Peloponnese.  The fruit is characterized by a sweet taste and elastic skin ranging from light yellow to deep red.  The environmental conditions of Ermionida and the local know-how have given 'Pomegranate Ermioni' its special characteristics that have set it apart from pomegranates grown in other parts of Greece.

It is a very important development for Ermioni, as a culmination of many years of effort by local farmers, who despite the difficulties and problems they face, continue to cultivate and produce these products of exceptional high quality.  The excellent quality of Ermionida's agricultural products is now recognised by the European Union and gains international and world certified recognition.

The inhabitants of Ermioni have celebrated the annual Pomegranate Festival, held on the last weekend of October, since 2011.
