'O Mastoras' Memories

O Mastoras (The Master) gyros food-bar finally closed down mid-April 2024, after supplying Ermioni residents and visitors with delicious traditional meals over many many years.  The original O Mastoras gyros bar was situated in the heart of the Old Village of Ermioni, close to the Panaghia church, and was known to all their European customers as 'The Holy Gyros'.  The business was originally run by Costas, his wife Yiota, with help from their family for all the time it operated in the Old Village.  The gyros food-bar would especially cater to the elder residents of the village, as well as many European residents and visitors to the town.  Costas would set up tables and chairs in the evenings along the winding road leading through the Old Village, allowing space for a car to get through, and wait for the tables to fill.

The tables quickly filled up each evening, with local residents and foreign visitors who found out about this secret hide-away gem.  Sadly, O Mastoras lost many of its regular customers as the older generation of local residents slowly died away, mostly of old age.

With fewer local customers, and rising rental rates, it forced Costas to relocate his gyros business to Pefkou Plataea (Pine Square) in 2012, just behind the Limani waterfront.  Their family-run gyros business grew in its new location, particularly during the summer months, as tourist customers discovered their tasty pitta-gyros, kalamaki and special chicken dishes.  However, the time came for Costas and Yiota to retire, so they sold their business in 2020 to new owners, under the watchful eye of Costas, who used to come and inspect the quality and service of the new business, in respect for his original customers, many from the original 'Holy Gyros'.

The new owners didn't get off to a great start, as the global pandemic closed down all the catering businesses, not just in Ermioni, but throughout Greece.  It was then a slow recovery period for the O Mastoras, for the local residents and most European visitors.  The business never fully recovered, and the new owners decided to close and sell all their catering equipment and furnishings.  The O Mastoras gyros-bar closed its doors for the last time mid- April 2024.   'Thank you!' for all the fond memories over the years.
