2nd General Election

Greeks headed to the polls again on Sunday 25th June in a bid to elect a government for the second time in just over a month.  After the original election held under the system of simple proportional representation, Sunday's ballot will be carried out with the system of reinforced proportionality, which means that the winning party will be awarded a bonus of 20 to 50 seats in parliament.  It receives 20 seats outright if it gets at least 25% of the vote, and can get up to 50 searts if it gets about 40% of the vote.  All participating parties need to secure at least 3% of the vote to enter Parliament for a four year term.  According to the latest opinion polls, the centre-right New Democracy party (ND) would return to government with a big parliamentry majority.  ND won the first General Election held on 21st May 2023.

New Democracy again won a massive victory in the second general election, securing its leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis a second term in office in an eight-party Parliament which will feature a strong contingent of far-right parties.  The conservative ND party won 40.56% and 158 seats in Parliament, ahead of second placed leftist alliance SYRIZA with 17.84% and 47 seats, less than compared to the first election.  Socialist PASOK was third with 11.87% with 32 seats, communist KKE won 7.67% and 20 seats, ahead of the far-right Spartiates with 4.69% and 13 seats with nationalist pro-Russia Greek Solution on 4.45% and 12 seats.  The ultra-Orthodox NIKI (Victory) got 3.70% and 10 seats and the Plevsi Eleftherias (Sailing for Freedom) party got 3.17% and 8 seats.

Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou will present Kyriakos Mitsotakis with the formal mandate to form a government on Monday 26th June, and he will be sworn in as Prime Minister soon after, to start a further four-year term in office.

Prime Minister Mitsotakis has pledged to upgrade the healthcare system, tackle inflated prices and boost wages, but also to transform the obsolete Greek state into a European one.  In other words, to speed up the decisions of the judiciary, to crack down on tax evasion, to promote meritocracy and evaluation in the public sector and make Greece more attractive abroad for investment.

Members of Greece's new government will be sworn in on Tuesday 27th June in a ceremony at the Presidential Mansion in Athens, presided by the Greek President.  The newly sworn-in ministers will then head to their respective headquarters to take over their new portfolios from the caretaker government that was appointed following the original General Election on 21st May.  They will then convene for the first meeting of the Cabinet on Wednesday at the prIme mInister's official residence at the Maximos Mansion.

On Thursday 29th June, Alexis Tsipras submitted his resignation from the party's leadership after SYRIZA suffered a crushing defeat in two elections held in May and June 2023.  Alexis Tsipras, aged 48, served as Greece's prime minister from 2015 to 2019.
